Foundations for Faith Community Nursing Course offered by Sanford Health

September 14-November 19, 2018

Sanford health offers the foundations for faith community nursing certified course taught by professional nursing faculty who are experienced faith community nurses representing an array of faith traditions. The course is a pre-requisite for RNs who want to enter faith community nursing practice.

This course explores the specialty practice of faith community nursing that combines professional nursing and health ministry, emphasizing health and healing within the faith community and the larger community. It offers registered nurses with a strong spiritual faith the knowledge to implement and facilitate a faith community nursing ministry, as well as practical opportunity to apply learnings from the course to the dynamic nature of their faith community and its particular needs. This course derives from the curriculum endorsed by the Westberg Institute for Faith Community Nursing.

The course starts with a weekend retreat near Watertown SD then continues on-line on Monday evenings. Course cost is $390 for RNs not employed by Sanford Health. This fee covers the cost of the retreat, books and other course materials.

For more information or questions about the foundations of faith community nursing course, please contact Karla Cazer at (605) 339-7295 orkarla.cazer@sanfordhealth.org

Concordia Program of Moorhead MN offers the Basic Preparation course each year. The cost of the week-long course remains at $450.00 which covers the cost of meals and most materials to start a health and healing ministry. For more information contact Jean Bokinski at 218-299-3825 or bokinski@cord.edu the informational brochure is at  http://wwwp.cord.edu/offices/parishnurse1.php

THE APNA has Scholarship monies available to help cover the cost of training!

Westberg Institute Updates    I had the opportunity to attend the Westberg Symposium this past month in Memphis TN. There is always some wonderful information to be gained and shared.  Helen Wordsworth from the UK was there to share about her role in training Parish Nurses in the UK and that there are PN’s all over the World. The World Forum on Parish Nursing will be held in Helsinki, Finland this June – There are Parish Nurses ALL OVER the World.  At this Symposium, New Zealand and Swaziland were represented as well. It really is a World-Wide health ministry!!  More on this in months to come.

Reflection for Nurses Week

                        TWELVE BEATITUDES FOR PARISH NURSES
Nurses are “blessed” with a variety of gifts that make them uniquely attractive to church congregation’s striving toward holistic health. However, these blessings, not unlike other talents have their “dark or shadow” side. The following beatitudes should be understood acknowledging that caveat:            From: Solari-Twadell, A., Djupe, A.M. & McDermott, M.A. (Eds.). (1991) Parish nursing: The developing practice. Park Ridge, IL; National Parish Nursing Resource Center

    4. Blessed be the parish nurse for she is cost effective!
    5. Blessed be the parish nurse for she has a high tolerance for ambiguity!
    6. Blessed be the parish nurse for she has had a generalist education and previous employment that have resulted in a broad variety of skills!
    7. Blessed be the parish nurse for she is process oriented!
    8. Blessed be the parish nurse for she is possessed with generosity of spirit, both of time and talent!
    9. Blessed be the parish nurse for she is focused on priorities!
    10. Blessed be the parish nurse for she is committed, dependable and persevering!
    11. Blessed be the parish nurse for she has a heritage and tradition of pioneering!
    12. Blessed be the parish nurse for she is a believer … in God, clients, nursing, herself and in a better world; here and in the hereafter!
